Autism – Everything you needed to know
Be the first to like thisAudience – health and social care professionals
The National Autistic Society’s information is aimed at all health and social care professionals who may come into contact with an adult or child with autism for reasons other than their autism. Doctors, nurses, paramedics, dentists and opticians may find this useful. A lot of this advice will also be useful to hospital staff who are caring for an in-patient with an autism spectrum disorder.
It’s not always obvious that a person has autism. This is why it is important for health professionals to be autism aware, since those with autism attending a medical or health appointment are likely to have very specific needs. People with autism may not feel pain, they may find it difficult to tell you what is wrong with them, or they may be extremely uncomfortable with being touched or examined.
